Von Trapp's unsung intents and purposes

No one told me about this part of Maria and Georg Von Trapp's story.

“If he had only asked me to marry him I might not have said yes.”

The story of Maria and Georg Von Trapp in the Sound of Music wasn’t supposed to happen. But not because of reasons depicted in the classic Austrian-American movie.

There was a deeper reason:

Maria never did care for Georg before they married.

So why did she leave the Abbey, follow him and his children out of Austria into Italy, and sailed across the ocean to America—if she didn’t love him?

  • Was it the security?

  • The singing?

  • Lack of better alternatives?

  • The children?

  • Pressure of Nazi regime?

  • All of the above?

Or was it what Georg said?
